One of the most advanced skills that plays a key role in all languages is the ability to write, which you will naturally learn after hearing, speaking and reading. You can improve your writing skills by using the following tips:

1. To write, you must first consider a specific subject and cultivate it in your mind so that you can easily convey it to the reader.

2. When you have an idea in mind and you want to write about it, you must first look at it from different angles. To do this, you need the “rain of thoughts or brainstorming” method. Brainstorming is a way in which you try to think deeply and irregularly about something. For example, in a logical context, you can think about the advantages and disadvantages of over-dependence on the Internet. Then put the points that came to your mind in this regard in order.

3. In connection with the rain of thoughts, it is important to have a critical view of the subject matter. In fact, you as a writer have to think a lot to be able to write everything logically and meaningfully.

4. When you know what you want to write about, you should first think about it and then put it down on paper. In this regard, creating an outline will be very useful. Because it allows you to show the main idea and message without having to know the details. You can write all these results on paper and organize them. “Think on paper,” says Brian Tracy.

5. If you are writing multi-part and sequential material such as “Storytelling”, you should arrange the items you have written in your outline chronologically, because you are writing a series of events that make up your outline.

6. One of the most suitable methods available for writing practice is “writing memoirs”. You can write the important events of your life in the form of daily, weekly and even monthly diaries in English. Try to get used to it over time. In this way, you have not only strengthened your writing skills, but also increased your thinking power.

7. You can use the portfolio while studying. A portfolio is a collection of writings along with images, documents and other items that you collect for further educational benefit. This will increase your thinking power and will have a positive impact on your study and more importantly on your life.

8. Obviously, being a good writer and having a strong lexical knowledge are closely related. The more words you know, the better you can naturally describe yourself using those words.

9. In addition to having lexical knowledge, you should also have good grammar knowledge, because writing is a formal and academic skill. In fact, writings that are not grammatically correct and do not have a semantic and logical burden will not be acceptable to the reader.

10. With regard to grammar, for example, you are expected to be familiar with the types of conjunctions and their uses in English. Conjunctions are words and phrases that connect sentence components in your writing, allowing you to write more fluently.

11. Correct it at the end of each post; That means read it carefully again and get help from the dictionary if needed. As a result, you can correct possible errors and mistakes, such as the use of incorrect words in terms of semantic fit, formal or informal form of the word, grammar, coherence, and other things that you may find in your text.

If you have ever wanted to study at a foreign university, you are probably familiar with the term motivation or SOP. Your cover letter will play a key role in the acceptance process, so that your acceptance or non-acceptance is directly related to having an attractive and acceptable cover letter or SOP. Writing a good cover letter may be a little difficult and stressful for you as well.

The post How to write an academic motivation letter appeared first on English Meetups.

In this article, we are going to give you the basics about the structure of the cover letter as well as its do’s and don’ts.

SOP or personal motivation letter

SOP stands for Statement of Purpose, which is the letter of intent or statement of purpose. The SOP is, in fact, a letter you send to your destination university stating your motivation for applying to the university of your choice. Some students think that a cover letter is just a letter of introduction and can be easily written, but this is not the case, but the SOP must contain the information that the university needs to accept you.

Motivation letters usually start with the following sentences:

“I am honored to be accepted into your university’s science field. Because I have been interested in science for as long as I can remember. “Ever since I started school, I have realized my interest in science.”

Most letters now have a similar structure. By submitting and editing the motivation letters of friends or students of previous years, students present fake and undesirable writings as motivation letters. If you do not want your motivation letter to fall into this category and the university admissions department still remembers your motivation letter in the last hours of the day and even after reading hundreds of admission applications, you must provide a unique text. Text specific to you. Vince Gutra, a professor at the University of Northern Iowa, illustrates the importance of unique writing with an example of the motivation of a librarian. Gutra still remembers the motivation letter of “Susan”, the applicant for that field. “When I was 11, my great-aunt Gretchen passed away,” Susan wrote. But it left me with something that changed the course of my life: a library with about five thousand books. The best days of my life were spent arranging and reading these books. “Since then, I have decided to be a librarian.”

This example, in addition to Susan’s indescribable passion for reading books, shows her unique effort to take care of books. Susan, on the other hand, has written a motivational letter that is different from other motivational letters because it recalls her personal experience.

SOP structure

1. Beginning

In this section, you should focus the Admissions Committee on your educational background. Reassure them that you will be a successful student. Mention it if you got a good grade in the exams or were one of the top 5 students at the university. If you have poor grades in your resume, give your reason for your poor performance at that time, and if the field you are considering is different from the field you passed, explain its positive educational effects on your chosen field.

۲. Reasons for choosing a study destination

State the reason for choosing the field, university and country of destination. To do this, you need to get a lot of information about the field, especially in the same university. It is better to write a separate SOP for each university and this part should be written with careful attention to the conditions and facilities of the desired university. Do not bore the reader with a lot of flattery.

3. Related experiences

After explaining your academic background, it is time to explain your field-related experiences. Name all your related experiences. Talk about your undergraduate projects, write about internships, industry experience, workshops, publications, and other volunteer activities you have done to improve your academic level. Do not show anything, but analyze your experiences and present the useful things you have learned from it. The method of analyzing experiences is more important than the experiences themselves, so keep these in mind.

4. Targets

State your short-term and long-term goals. These goals should clearly explain the relationship between your acceptance and your future. At the same time, explain your future career to the decision-making body in the best way possible, depending on your personal goals and the field you are applying for.

5. Conclusion

As a conclusion, explain in a few lines about your suitability for studying in the desired field and university and the appropriateness of your academic position with your personality.

6. to appreciate Finally, thank the committee members for taking the time to review the motivation of your letter.

One of the problems that language learners may face is a better and more complete understanding of listening. There are many ways to learn and strengthen listening, including the transcription technique to strengthen listening to help you achieve great results in strengthening a new language. In this article, we want to introduce you to the transcription technique to strengthen your listening skills or hear a new language.

What is a transcript?

One of the best ways to enhance your listening experience is to transcribe or transcribe the audio text onto paper. Write down all the conversations and words that you listen to in the audio files as a listening on a piece of paper. Although this technique may seem difficult at first, over time it simplifies your listening skills, and you can watch movies or pass language exams in the listening section without the need for subtitles.

How to transcribe correctly?

Find your level audio file.

To do a proper transcription, you must first select an audio file that fits your language level. Be careful that this file is not so simple that you do not learn anything and not so hard that you can not understand and have to listen to each sentence many times. The subject of the audio file should be to your liking so that you do not get tired of listening to it and doing the exercises.

Listen to the audio file to the end.

Once you have found an audio file that is appropriate for your level, first listen to it from beginning to end to find out what is being talked about, but if the audio file contains text or a subtitle video, do not look at it until the last step. Come back a second time and listen to it and try to write down the keywords and key information. Wherever you think you droped behind, stop the audio file and write down the main points and listen to the rest of the file.

Take notes.

Listen to an audio file every day and write it down while listening; This may be a little time consuming at first, but over time, with a lot of practice, you will strengthen your accuracy and memory, and you will increase your writing and listening speed at the same time, as well as learning the words and how to spell them. Re-play the file for the third time and this time write all the words and conversations in detail. After hearing two or three words, pause the file and write the words. Be sure to write down words, especially collocations, that you do not know, find their meaning, and use them in sentences.

Advantages of Transcription Technique.

Many learners have achieved significant success in TOEFL and IELTS test listening with the help of the transcription technique. Here are some of the benefits of this method:

Active listening skills will be strengthened and you will have a better understanding of the concepts.

The transcript technique is used to learn more listening languages.

In this way, you will become better acquainted with the speaking speed of the native speakers of the target language.

You will learn the structure of sentences better, such as how to place verbs correctly.

Transcript helps you learn to pronounce words correctly.

With this technique, you will understand the accent and stress on the words more than before.

Without having to read written words, you will get acquainted with new words and your vocabulary will expand.

How to get a score of 7 in the rating

Below are the criteria you see that are needed to get a score of 7. When scoring, you will be given a score for each of the following, and finally the average scores will be considered for the final score. So if you got a score of 6.5, it means that you did not meet the standards required in the table below to get a higher score.

IELTS Band 7 Descriptors Criteria

Addresses all parts of the task

Presents a clear position throughout the response

Presents, extends and supports main ideas, but there may be a tendency to over-generalize and / or supporting ideas may lack focus

Task Achievement

Logically organizes information and ideas; there is a clear progression throughout

Uses a range of cohesive devices appropriately although there may be some under- / over-use

Presents a clear central topic within each paragraph

Coherence & Cohesion

Uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision

Uses less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation

May produce occasional errors in word choice, spelling, and / or word formation

Lexical Resource

Has good control of grammar and punctuation but may make a few errors

Products frequent error-free sentences

Uses a variety of complex structures

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Scoring criteria

Task Achievement

In this section, the examiner looks for how far you have come in achieving the goal of the question and what you have been asked to do and have an acceptable result. In other words, this section shows your understanding of the question form, the complete answer to the question, and how well you have been able to support your ideas. Consider the following example:

Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In this section you should consider both points of view and also express your opinion. Now, if you do not write your opinion and review a point of view, you will not succeed in getting a score of 7 from the Task achievement section.

One of the big problems with getting a score of seven is that your idea is not completely clear or you change your idea throughout the text.

Coherence and cohesion

This section considers your organization and how you are progressing. In this section, you should know that you should have a clear central theme or reference in each paragraph. For example, if you are writing about the pros and cons of a topic, you should consider a specific paragraph for each of them. Therefore, the important things to consider in coherence and coherence include:

Organizing section 1 (in the academic exam and section 2 essay)

Coherence tools (pronouns, conjunctions, definition letters, etc.)

Reference (replacing a noun or noun phrase with a pronoun) and substitution (replacing another form of words and phrases instead of repeating them)

Lexical resource

In this section you should show that you know the words that are less common and have a higher level and you can use them in the right place.

Grammatical range and accuracy

This section assesses your grammar level. In this section you should show that you can use a wide range of sentence structures and be very careful in using them. Having a few complex sentences with words like because, if and although is not enough and you have to use more complex structures. This is one of the biggest challenges for applicants. In other words, most sentences should not have grammatical errors. It will not be easy, you almost have to be a skilled writer.

What is important in this section is to use different types of structures that have the least amount of error. So do not forget that using simple structures is worthless even with a zero error and you will not receive a perfect score.

We hope this article has been helpful to you and that we have been able to introduce you to Band Descriptors.

Structure of sentence types in English

Simple sentence in English

A simple sentence in English is actually a sentence that consists of only one clause sentence and has a verb. Now look at the following examples:

Simple sentence formula:

Subject + Verb

Computers are important in the modern world.

The children were laughing.

All the girls are learning English.

Composite sentence structure

Sentence structure in English

Now we want to define compound sentences in English. To make a compound sentence, we must use at least two independent clauses. To connect two sentences, we can either use a semicolon (;) and we can use coordinating conjunctions. Now look at the following examples:

Tip: The most common conjunctions are:

For

And

Nor

But

Or

Yet

So

Then

Example:

The piston engines pollute the air; the electrical ones do not.

You go; I go.

I phoned him but he did not answer.

They are coming by car so they should be here soon.

We looked everywhere but we couldn’t find him.

Complex sentence structure in English

Complex sentences consist of one independent sentence and one or more pseudo-sentences. The dependent clause is usually connected to the independent clause by inflection. Do not forget that compound sentences are used to show the specific relationship between two concepts. If the pseudo-sentence comes first, a comma is placed between it and the independent sentence. Otherwise, no punctuation is required.

Now look at the following examples:

Her father died when she was very young.

In the example above, the constituent Pseudo and the conjunction are:

Her father died (Original Pseudo-sentence)

When (affiliate link)

She was very young (Pseudo-dependent sentence)

She had a difficult childhood because her father died when she was very young.

The constructor of the Pseudo-sentence and the conjunction of the above example are:

She had a difficult childhood (Original Pseudo sentence)

Because (affiliate link)

Her father died (Pseudo-dependent sentence 1)

When (affiliate link)

She was very young (Pseudo-dependent sentence2)

Although a few snakes are dangerous most of them are quite harmless.

Sometimes a pseudo-dependent sentence comes at the beginning of a sentence. The maker of Pseudo-dependent sentences and the conjunction of the example above are:

Although (dependent conjunction)

Some snakes are dangerous (Pseudo-dependent sentence)

Most of them are harmless (Original Pseudo sentence)

I hope this article has been useful for you and that you are familiar with all three sentence structures in English.
