Do not miss Achilles heel!
Linguists and teachers disagree about the use of inclusive mother language in the classroom. Your native language is the equivalent of an instinct, and the vast majority of the mistakes you make when using English are made through logical transmission (or interference).

The post How to use linguistic differences to our advantage appeared first on English Meetups.

In fact, you are trying to navigate the “English landscape” using a map of your native language. For example, Russian does not have any articles (a, an, the), so the natives of this language may always try to use these words correctly in English. Native French often find it difficult to pronounce “h” in English, so they may pronounce the word “chicken” as “en”. If you want to speak fluent English, you should try to correct your mistakes by understanding where they come from.

Pay close attention to the differences!

What is the difference between your native language and English in terms of structure and use? If you improve your understanding of these differences, you can eliminate some of the errors that come with your native English language (or language instinct). For example, if you know that the standard word order in your language is “enough big “, but the correct order in English is “big enough”, then you can do more to prevent this mistake from happening in the future. . This requires a conscious intervention on your part until you make a mistake, which is automatically transmitted from your native language.

Choose to use English wherever possible.

You will encounter many situations where you can use English or your native language. If you decide to become fluent in your mother language, your fluency in English will suffer. Whenever you have the opportunity, leave your comfort zone and use your English! Even if you do not speak full English, you will improve over time.

Use the translation to your advantage

Some teachers discourage students from translating into their native language. This may be because the tutor feels uncomfortable with a language they do not understand, or it may be because they believe that students should understand English through English. This method can not recognize the benefits of limited use of the mother language when learning another language. A quick translation into the student’s native language can save a lot of time, and the use of an accurate bilingual dictionary often helps to better understand the meaning of words in each language and how they overlap or differ.

Learning a new language means learning a new culture

Every linguist tells you that language and culture are closely related – you cannot learn one without learning about the other. By “culture” we mean: mentality, views, norms and so on. Our mother language is full of colorful terms, similes and terms that reflect our values, beliefs and understanding of the world around us. As you learn English, you will find that “things we do” happen in a place similar to yours, but very different in others. Be aware of the fact that we do not see the whole world the same. By acknowledging our special cultural characteristics, you can truly appreciate the beautiful, weird and wonderful faces of other languages. For example, let’s compare English and Russian: an Englishman says “needle eye” where a Russian says “ear”, an Englishman says “(I’m so hungry) I can eat a horse” Russian says “elephant” and a British says “drink like a fish” (that alcohol drinks like a fish) while a Russian says “be quiet like a fish”. What do you think?

When in English the subject and object of a sentence are one person, the reflective pronoun is used as the object. In this article, we want to introduce Reflexive pronouns in English to you dear ones with an example, so that in addition to learning these pronouns, you can also learn how to use them, so that you can be with us at the end of this article.

What are Reflective Pronouns?

Reflexive pronouns are pronouns that end in self- or selves-. The use of reflective pronouns is when the subject and the object of a sentence are the same, in which case they will replace the object. For example, in the sentence “I believe in myself.” The word “myself” is a reflective pronoun. The reason for naming these pronouns is that in English the word “reflexive” means “reflected” and that is why these pronouns are called “reflexive pronouns” because they refer to the subject of the sentence. Reflective pronouns can play the role of direct and indirect objects in a sentence.

Table of reflective pronouns

Familiarize yourself with reflective pronouns in the table below:

Singular myself

myself

yourself

himself

herself

itself

Total

ourselves

yourselves

themselves

Application and sample questions of reflective pronouns

One of the main uses of reflective pronouns is when the subject and the object are actually one person. For a better understanding, look at the following examples:

He is teaching himself to cook sea food.

I am teaching myself to play the piano.

Be careful while you’re skating. You might fall down and hurt yourself.

When the verb of the sentence is preceded by a preposition, the reflective pronoun can be used after the preposition and as a complement. Now look at the following examples:

They had to cook for themselves.

He was feeling very sorry for himself.

Reflective pronouns with the preposition by are used when it is emphasized that the person has done something alone or without assistance:

I don’t feel very comfortable going to the movies by myself.

We cleaned the house by ourselves.

He lived by himself in an enormous house.

He lived alone in that very large house.

We will use reflective pronouns to emphasize a person or something special, especially when talking about a famous person.

Fethiye itself is quite a small city.

J.K Rowling herself signed my book.

When the verb of the sentence comes with a preposition, the reflexive pronoun can be used after the preposition and as a complement. Consider the following examples:

They had to cook for themselves.

He was feeling very sorry for himself.

Reflective pronouns are used when the subject is emphasized. Consider the following example:

We decorate the house ourselves.

tip:

Note that after the place letters are added, the personal pronoun is used, not the reflective pronoun. Adjectives such as with (meaning with) are also used after the personal pronoun, not the reflective pronoun. for example:

He had a suitcase beside “him”.

tip:

Reflective pronouns will not be used after words like to, like and such as. After these words, object pronouns are used:

ducated people like ourselves should keep an open mind. (Incorrect)

Educated people like us should keep an open mind. (Right)

tip:

Words like hisself and theirselves and such words do not exist in English and it is wrong to use them. Consider the following example:

The students painted the class by theirselves. (Incorrect)

The students painted the class by themselves. (Right)

Fluency in English is achieved by having extensive vocabulary, good listening comprehension skills, and correct grammar. Therefore, 100% focus is just wrong in speaking. Imagine you are building a house. You will need a wide range of different materials - brick, lumber, cement, slate for the roof and so on.

This is also the case when you are fluency in English. You need solid foundations that you can build on, and these demonstrate other key language skills. To help “improve the basics of mastery” try the following:

Work hard to improve your vocabulary

Having a large vocabulary gives you more flexibility and power of expression in English. Therefore, it is important that you constantly strive to improve your vocabulary through (conscious study, and) passive exposure to language. One of the biggest problems language learners faces when speaking English is that they lack the words to say what they want to say or can not make sentences quickly enough to have fluent conversation. Working on vocabulary can help a lot. However, you must choose words and phrases that you can learn if you want to remember them.

Just learn the words and phrases that you are really going to use regularly! Have a personal dictionary or glossary for new words and phrases. Set up mini-tests each week on a collection of the most useful new terms you’ve found, or maybe use a program like Wordsteps to build your lists and test your vocabulary over time.

Remember that hearing is half the battle

If you want to know how to speak fluent English, first learn how to be a good listener. Fluency is often achieved by listening and then copying the language used by others. English has a wide variety of regional accents and shapes, so if you want to understand native speech, you need to work on your hearing comprehension skills. To do this, try the following: Watch English TV series, movies with subtitles, YouTube channels, etc. along! You can also listen to audiobooks and transcribe them on paper, then compare the original printed version with your text to see if you made a mistake. Write down every word and phrase you find useful.

Love the book!

Reading more can help you understand the language in terms of word order, grammatical structures, idioms, and other set phrases used by the native speaker. If you read a lot of articles on the same subject or books by an author, you will find that words and phrases are repeated from time to time. The more similar texts you read, the easier it will be to understand the words used.

Avoid reading very old or outdated content. Stick to texts written over the past 30 years because they are more indicative of the language used by indigenous peoples today.

Analyze Native English for speak naturally

If you want to speak English naturally, you need to examine how the natives use this language in their everyday conversations. Try copying dialogues from textbooks or transcribing them from TV shows (for example, soap operas or comedies that reflect common uses). You will find that Native speakers tend to use phrasal verbs, contractions, and simplified forms (especially in American English). This language is probably different from the languages in the textbooks and gives you valuable information on how to speak English today. You may want to practice with a conversational partner to practice common English terms of the situation you are learning. You will find that many words and phrases are often repeated in everyday English conversations, so it is worthwhile to identify them and get to know them well.

As you have experienced in school or university, one of the biggest problems with traditional English classroom teaching is that there is a "one-size-fits-all" approach. Classes are taught in groups, students dominate others with confidence, while others are given less attention, and courses are usually textbook-based.

The post Make English relevant and interesting appeared first on English Meetups.

This style of teaching can erode any interest in the language and impair your motivation to study. If you want to know how to speak fluent English, you must be the starting point. Here are some tips to help you become more personal with English and boost your motivation to become more fluent:

Relate your existing hobbies and interests to English.

English is never boring if you read with content that is relevant and interesting to you. Take a piece of paper and write down a list of all the hobbies and interests that excite you in your daily life. Now think of ways to connect each of these items to English. For example, if you love tennis and read about the sport in your native language every week, stop and start reading in English. In many cases, you will find that you have faster access to the latest news and information because you do not have to wait for translations to be translated into your native language.

Avoid using textbooks and content that you find boring.

Motivation is vital when learning a language. Many language learners do not develop a love of English at school because they find lessons and textbooks boring. Do not make this mistake again! Try a wide range of different materials and see what works best for you.

Make a list of interesting topics to discuss

To become more fluent in English, you need to speak to others regularly. This can be with native or non-native friends, relatives, members of a local English conversation club, other students in a group class, a Skype English tutor and so on.

When you are involved and interested, you will master English faster. Try to make a list of topics that stimulate you intellectually and emotionally, then search Google to find articles, videos and other related content for further discussion.

Join English online forums that are related to your work or interests

Even if you live in a non-English speaking country, you can still access the wonderful “opportunities” of native English online. If you enjoy communicating with others online, you may want to join online forums where similar people write about topics of interest to you. You can then learn from common members by writing down common phrases and phrases that you can use later when talking about these topics. Another benefit of online forums is that participants tend to use current terms, phrases that are common in circulation, and natural conversational forms.

Vocabulary building

This is an important component of any English class. This strategy helps to focus part of each class session on better vocabulary retention. Teachers can ask students to recall unfamiliar words and review their meanings in class, or use interactive vocabulary-building exercises related to the reading material in class.

Story Writing Workshop

Try to ask your students to participate in the writers’ workshop several times a year. Using this trick and considering the model of writing in the workshop and reading and writing different projects, it allows students to learn and participate in all aspects of the writing process: drafting, revising, editing and publishing Participate ‌

Reply and edit

This can be an effective strategy for English teachers or a very valuable trick for both teacher and student. You can try many different answers from all the peers in the class. In this way, students have the opportunity to think critically about the writing of others and to see the results that their classmates have achieved by writing an article. In addition, teachers can see how different students learn and better strategies in the future.

group learning

This learning strategy is very useful for English teachers who have also included language literature in their classes. Collaborative learning requires students to discuss minor literature topics as a group. By allowing students to have meaningful discussion, they begin to learn to analyze English literature and participate in an educational process that is more interesting to them than a public lecture for a chapter of a book.

Selected student texts

Allowing students to choose what they read is an effective strategy that literacy professionals recommend as a way to better develop lifelong readers. Students can choose from a collection of age-appropriate and reading books. After a period of independent study, students are divided into groups and discuss what they have read, in the style of a reading club, followed by journalism. When this strategy is successful, students can delve deeper into the meaning of language phrases, acquire core skills, and discuss valuable books with their classmates. Teachers using this strategy have found that this can lead to classrooms that are involved in learning grammar, literature, and vocabulary.

Whether you are a book author, a journalist describing a woman in politics, or an employer reviewing a performance, describing women in the 21st century means looking beyond appearances. Many (but not all) of these positive traits can be applied to anyone, not just women. You can use them in writing your next article or in describing the woman you admire!

Words about intelligence

While writers quickly describe male characters as smart, they do so less often than their female counterparts. Many admirable masculine traits, when portrayed as a woman, seem a little incomprehensible. To make sure this does not happen in your post, use the following words to describe a smart woman:

Astute

she offers intelligent solutions to problems based on her understanding.

Clear-sighted

she is insightful and can understand decisions clearly.

Creative

she offers ideas that others have not previously considered.

Decisive

After weighing the consequences correctly, she commits to her decision.

Discerning

she describes good judgement and taste.

Innovative

she uses new ideas for old problems to find creative solutions.

Inquisitive

she asks relevant and relevant questions to learn more about a subject.

Quick-witted

She has a high level of intelligence that helps her respond skill-fully to situations.

Resourceful

She uses what is available to solve problems.

Shrewd

She makes practical decisions based on her needs, but does not disclose them beyond what he thinks is necessary.

Sincere

She uses evidence and experience to try to provide honest answers.

Words about power

A woman does not need to lift a car above her head to be strong. In fact, women tend to show their strength in more measured ways than physical strength. Describe the female personality with these strong traits:

Assertive

He is frank about what She wants without aggression.

Athletic

She can move fast and respond with physical strength.

She stands firm in the face of adversity.

Tenacious

Tough

She takes risks when trying to achieve his goals.

Words about compassion

Compassion is often seen as a feminine trait, even to the point of self-sacrifice; But there are more interesting words to describe a woman’s kindness instead of “nice” or “loving”. Here are some examples of ways to talk about a compassionate woman:

Affectionate

She does not betray the trust of others and always does what she says.

Using powerful words to describe women is just one way to make your writing more appealing. Interesting stories come from interesting characters and what you are new to Whether it’s a fictional story or an article about a woman you know, finding the right words is very important.

Learn words sparsely

Some language learners memorize words thematically. For example, words related to animals, clothes, family, etc. These people know a lot of words but are not able to speak fluently when talking to others. Choose words based on how much you need in practical conversations. See what are the most commonly used words in English or any other language you want to learn.

Too much focus on one of the skills

Too much focus on one of the skills (for example, just listening to podcasts) or grammar can be very tedious and will make learning monotonous and will definitely leave the learner learning after a while. In addition, it is not possible to acquire the various skills needed to reach the professional level of the language. In this situation, the learner will only be able to acquire some skills in the field of grammar or listening. You need to make language learning fun and enjoyable. Be creative and try to do something different each time to learn the skills.

To generalize

Generalization occurs when a learner incorrectly uses a rule or command for a situation for which the situation does not apply at all. According to one study, this type of error is more common among beginner learners. To avoid generalizing a rule and grammar, one must be careful about exceptions, such as irregular verbs.

When you are learning a new language, try to make connections between new and old words. If there is a word in your new language similar to your native language, try to make a visual and mental connection between the two words.

When communicating between words, visualize the images of the two words clearly and several times a day in your mind so that they are completely engraved in your mind.

Try to be creative in memorizing words. It seems easier to memorize unusual and bizarre things than trivial things, so be creative in communicating words.

noting

Always have a notebook and a pen with you, write down every new word you hear or see and go to the meaning at the right time, this will make you never forget to learn.

Repetition in learning English words

Repetition is a very important technique in learning English vocabulary. Because words stay in memory as long as possible, they need to be repeated most of the time. However, repetition alone is not effective. This should be accompanied by an understanding of the meaning of those particular words and by relating them to other similarly learned words.

Learn English words with the help of illustration

If learners have learned to associate words with pictures, they can easily learn new words. There is a clever technique in learning English that is mental imagery.

If learners associate the “Travel Agency” with a picture of a building that gives us travel information;

They will probably keep that word in their minds for a long time. It is very important for learners to imagine the words they need to learn.

Learn and memorize words using illustrations

flash card

One of the interesting techniques is to use flash cards. This is a very powerful way to practice vocabulary. Making flashcards is still an effective way to learn and memorize English words. Although this method is very old, it never loses its effectiveness.

Make a sentence with words

Making a sentence helps you to use the new words you have learned in the form of a sentence at the right time and place. Try to make a variety of sentences with the words you have learned.

Test yourself

Test yourself regularly This will help you practice more vocabulary. Some websites offer vocabulary tests that give you more practice opportunities. These sites usually rank words.
