Ten confusing English words
Some of these words are confusing because of their appearance. Others confuse learners because of their pronunciation, and some because of their specific and different uses. We will explain these words together to make it easier for you to understand.
Allowed / aloud
allowed means “to ask for permission” while aloud has the same meaning as “loud”.
Bored / board
Bored means losing interest (dull / tired) but board is a “wide piece of wood”.
Break / brake
The meaning of Break is clear, but the meaning of brake is what you do to “slow down” a car or bicycle.
New / knew
New means the opposite of old, while knew is the past tense of the verb know and means “to know”.
piece / peace
A pie is “a part of something” (even the first three letters are made up of a pie). But the meaning of peace is “the absence of voice and enmity.”
past / passed
Past is a noun, but passed is a verb that has an s and ed added.
sure / shore
Sure means “certain”. But shore means “beach or shoreline”.
stairs / Stares
stairs is a noun but the current Stares means “stare eagerly”.
they’re / their / there
One way to summarize is they are.
Their adjective is an object.
there is a place like the phrase over there.
whether / weather
Whether indicates a choice “whether or not” while weather refers to the weather condition.
The difference of a few words is confusing
The number of confusing words in English is very high, but here we want to teach you the difference between some of these words.
The difference between lonely and alone
We use alone when we say we are alone, but we use lonely when we feel uncomfortable as a result of being alone. alone refers to a physical state but lonely refers to a mental state. Note the following example.
Sometimes I like to be alone.
You won’t be so lonely there.
The difference between hope and wish
Wish is naturally used when there is very little chance that our wish will come true. Hope means to be hopeful and is used when there is a good chance that something will happen. Consider the following example:
some people wish to have wings.
We are all going to the stadium, we hope our team wins.
The difference between job and work
Other confusing words in English are work and job. The difference between the two words is that job is a job that we have and work is a job that we do as a task in that job. Note the following example.
I completed my work in the afternoon
I earn 2000 dollars from my job on a monthly basis
