In this article, we want to introduce you to the techniques of increasing the reading speed, so stay tuned.

Like all other IELTS test skills, being fast in IELTS reading requires a lot of practice. Once you can read the text quickly, you can take the time to check the answers to your IELTS reading questions and attend the test session with more confidence. When you read several texts before the test, in addition to increasing your speed, you will also increase your language level.

The ability to read quickly on the IELTS test is important, but IELTS reading techniques are also important. High-speed reading is sometimes helpful; But sometimes it prevents you from answering IELTS test questions correctly. So, we need to know when fast and when we need to read the text slowly and in detail. In general, we need to read the text faster when looking for the general meaning of the text or finding specific words and phrases.

Techniques to increase reading speed

1. Take time while studying.

How many words can you read per minute? Measure your reading speed. Use the following formula for this purpose:

Number of lines on that page x Number of words in a line

2. Study different topics.

Reading a non-fiction article may take longer than reading a few pages of a crime book. If you want to evaluate your progress, be sure to read a suitable text every time you practice to increase your speed.

3. Aim realistically.

Your primary goal should be to “read fast”, but the question is, how fast do you want to read? Speed reading is not just about speeding up words, it is about how well you understand what is being read.

If you read an article in one minute but do not remember anything at the end, then the speed of your reading method is not correct. Remember to use your index finger or pen to follow the lines as you read. This will speed up your reading.

4. Do not read all the words.

Our eyes can only see a few words at a time when reading. So, try to see the maximum number of words but not all words. It is better to read the words in sections.

5. Read silently.

Not only should you not read aloud but you should not hear the words in your head while reading. This will drastically reduce your reading speed. It may be difficult at first to do this, but gradually you will master it with practice.

Structure of sentence types in English

Simple sentence in English

A simple sentence in English is actually a sentence that consists of only one clause sentence and has a verb. Now look at the following examples:

Simple sentence formula:

Subject + Verb

Computers are important in the modern world.

The children were laughing.

All the girls are learning English.

Composite sentence structure

Sentence structure in English

Now we want to define compound sentences in English. To make a compound sentence, we must use at least two independent clauses. To connect two sentences, we can either use a semicolon (;) and we can use coordinating conjunctions. Now look at the following examples:

Tip: The most common conjunctions are:

For

And

Nor

But

Or

Yet

So

Then

Example:

The piston engines pollute the air; the electrical ones do not.

You go; I go.

I phoned him but he did not answer.

They are coming by car so they should be here soon.

We looked everywhere but we couldn’t find him.

Complex sentence structure in English

Complex sentences consist of one independent sentence and one or more pseudo-sentences. The dependent clause is usually connected to the independent clause by inflection. Do not forget that compound sentences are used to show the specific relationship between two concepts. If the pseudo-sentence comes first, a comma is placed between it and the independent sentence. Otherwise, no punctuation is required.

Now look at the following examples:

Her father died when she was very young.

In the example above, the constituent Pseudo and the conjunction are:

Her father died (Original Pseudo-sentence)

When (affiliate link)

She was very young (Pseudo-dependent sentence)

She had a difficult childhood because her father died when she was very young.

The constructor of the Pseudo-sentence and the conjunction of the above example are:

She had a difficult childhood (Original Pseudo sentence)

Because (affiliate link)

Her father died (Pseudo-dependent sentence 1)

When (affiliate link)

She was very young (Pseudo-dependent sentence2)

Although a few snakes are dangerous most of them are quite harmless.

Sometimes a pseudo-dependent sentence comes at the beginning of a sentence. The maker of Pseudo-dependent sentences and the conjunction of the example above are:

Although (dependent conjunction)

Some snakes are dangerous (Pseudo-dependent sentence)

Most of them are harmless (Original Pseudo sentence)

I hope this article has been useful for you and that you are familiar with all three sentence structures in English.
