Learn and memorize language words
Reason for forgetting English words
Jeremy Harmer identifies two main causes of forgetfulness: interference with subsequent learning and inadequate use.
Interference of subsequent learning
Most teachers are aware of the fact that introducing a new word can cause the previous word to be forgotten.
This often happens when the words being taught are very similar to the words they have recently learned, because, according to Harmer, the new words have the effect of “rewriting” what they have learned.
This is why teachers should avoid teaching vocabulary that contains similar meanings to previous words.
Insufficient use
Research shows that repeated review of what is learned can significantly reduce the rate of forgetfulness.
However, simply repeating those words and encountering them in the same basic sense is not enough.
Using words in different ways and at the same level really helps in this regard. Research shows that students learn better if they encounter or use them differently from what they were initially familiar with.
Another important aspect for students when using specific English words is to make sure they understand the use and meaning of those words. Students may also use new words in real-life events or activities.
